Get Help

One thing is for certain, if you have a dead battery, you’re going to need help. Many new BMW vehicles include roadside assistance, so you can always call for a jumpstart. If you don’t (or prefer not to), you’ll need another driver to help you.

Park and Prepare

If possible, have the working vehicle park directly in front of you (or as close to you as they safely can). Gather your jumper cables and open both hoods, securing them with hood struts. Make sure both vehicles are turned off and remove the keys.

Attach the Jumper Cables

Now, it’s time to attach your jumper cables:

  • Clamp the red clamp to the positive terminal of your dead battery
  • Attach the other red clamp to the positive terminal of the working battery
  • Hook the black clamp to the negative terminal of the working battery
  • Finally, clamp the other black clamp to an unpainted metal surface of your vehicle

Start the Cars

Finally, start the working vehicle, then, after a few minutes, start your car. Once it begins to run, make sure to keep it running for a few minutes to charge properly. Remove the jumper cables in the opposite order you attached them to and let it run for about 15-20 minutes, either idling or driving.
